Nile Basin

NILE FRIEND

NILE FRIEND-Water is one of the eight FRIEND programmes of UNESCO's International Hydrological Programme and currently involves 6 countries in the region.

The Water Research Center of the University of Khartoum took the responsibility of coordinating FRIEND/NILE in 2020.

Priority Area for Research and Capacity Building :

  • Trans-boundary water resources management and benefit sharing in the Nile basin (WEFE) Nexus
  • Coordinated operation of new water‐related infrastructure across the basin's international borders.
  • Water Diplomacy and Cooperation
  • Climatic change/ variability and hydrological extremes  (flood and drought management)
  • Irrigation management and water use efficiency
  • Echo-hydrology and echo-system sustainability
SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES REGIONAL PROJECTS TRAINING EVENTS
  • National Workshop on Science – Policy Dialogue on WEF Nexus, Feb, 2019.
  • Second Workshop on Water Diplomacy and Cooperation in the Nile, December  2019 (TB water law, negotiations, mediation, conflict management…).
  • Improving Urban Water Management in Khartoum, January, 2020 (for UNESCO-Khartoum)
  • Third  workshop on Water Diplomacy , March 2020 (Role of Scientific Research in Supporting Negotiations in the Nile).
  • Role of Scientific Research in Flood Disaster Risk Management in Sudan, October, 2020. (Focus on 2020 Nile floods in Sudan)
  • 4th Workshop on Water Diplomacy in the Nile (June 2021) (3 days + one day field visit)
  • Regional Conference on Water Resources Management in the Nile Basin (January, 2022) (3 days)
