Students from the Montpellier Master in Water Sciences explore water management in the Netherlands in the context of climate change
From 4 to 10 February 2024, 10 students from the Water and Society, Water and Agriculture and Water Resources courses of the Montpellier Master in Water Sciences (University of Montpellier, AgroParisTech, Institut Agro) took part in an international field trip in the Netherlands, co-organised by the IHE-Delft and AgroParisTech.
Thanks to visits and meetings with institutional stakeholders and academics, the students learned about and analysed some of the challenges facing the Netherlands in terms of water management influenced by of climate change. They focused on historical issues relating to water and agriculture, energy and waterscapes, polders and land reclamation, as well as more recent issues such as drought management and the place of nature in Delta works.
The "Montpellier cross-thematic Mobility - MoXMo" is an international field school run by the "Global Challenges for Sustainable Development" international master's program, jointly organized by five European universities (including UM) belonging to the Charm-EU alliance. This express student mobility program is a key part of the training program, which focuses on learning by solving challenges. It enables students to work in international, interdisciplinary teams on environmental issues that are relevant to a given region.
For the second edition of MoXMo in 2024, nearly 60 students from the CHARM master's program and 6 PhD students from universities in the South of France, invited by ICIREWARD, met from April 15 to 26 in the Hérault region, around the Etang de Thau and in Montpellier. Their objective: to reflect on how to raise awareness and involve both civil society and the professional world in the concrete problems of the Thau lagoon. Topics covered included agriphotovoltaics applied to shellfish farming, the use of AI for water analysis in the Etang de Thau, eco-responsible walking trails, subsidized environmentally-friendly actions for agriculture and livestock farming, food safety, etc.
