What is needed to bridge the data knowledge gap in hydrology?

EURO FRIEND

EURO-FRIEND is the oldest regional group that started in 1985 around the construction of a comprehensive shared hydrological database.

Today, the group includes 31 european countries gathered around the UNESCO Centre ICWRGC (International Centre for Water Resources and Global Change).

The EURO-FRIEND regional group is fully in line with the priorities of the IHP (Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme) and is particularly committed to the 3rd priority "Bridging the data and knowledge gaps".

The activities are structured around 3 main research questions:

  • How can droughts in streamflow be predicted from weather data and soil moisture conditions?
  • Are global hydrological models able to cpature observed spatial and temporal changes in hydrological regimes and extremes?
  • How can experimental river catchment studies enhance our understanding of hydrological processes at different scales?

TRAINING EVENTS SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES REGIONAL PROJECTS

Every month the EURO FRIEND network organise seminar/training series dedicated to sharing experience between scientists.

The session will last approximately 1 hour, with about 45 minutes dedicated to the presentation, followed by 15 minutes of discussion.

You can follow the online session live (check our event page to register !) or you can find the upload videos on the EURO FRIEND Youtube Channel.

The ICWRGC also coordinates several database networks:

  • Network of the global water data centres GTN-H, in partnership with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS).
  • The GEMStat database on global freshwater quality
  • The ISMN database, International Soil Moisture Network
  • The Global Runoff Data Centre is an international data centre operating under the auspices of the WMO.
